In a significant boost to community healthcare, the Okwuluora Foundation has provided free eye screening and treatment to more than 200 residents of Enugu-Ezike in Enugu State. The impactful event, which took place on January 17, 2026, brought essential ophthalmological services directly to the doorsteps of the less privileged.
A Community Gathers for Vision Care
The free medical outreach was held at Liberty Villa on Ogbebo Lawrence Agbedo Road in the Ogwugwu-Umueze Amachalla area of Enugu-Ezike. The programme attracted a large crowd from across Igbo-Eze North Local Council, demonstrating a critical need for accessible eye care services in the region.
Executed in collaboration with The Premium Nation’s Eye Hospital in Nsukka, the one-day event featured a full team of ophthalmic doctors and support staff. They diligently screened, diagnosed, and treated patients for various eye conditions. Remarkably, every service was offered completely free of charge, funded entirely by the Foundation.
Beyond consultations, beneficiaries received complementary reading glasses and necessary medications before departing, ensuring immediate follow-up care.
Foundation's Vision for Holistic Empowerment
The Founder of the Foundation, Chief Frank Agbedo, a Lagos-based legal practitioner, provided insight into the NGO's broader mission. Established in 2023, the Okwuluora Foundation focuses on multiple pillars of community support:
- Supporting widows.
- Awarding scholarships to brilliant students from indigent homes.
- Boosting small-scale businesses.
- Empowering youths with practical skills for self-reliance.
- Providing medical support to the needy.
Chief Agbedo, who also chairs the Board of Trustees, revealed that this eye screening marked the organisation’s first major public programme since its official registration and flag-off.
A Pledge for Sustainable Impact
Emphasizing a commitment to long-term change, Chief Agbedo announced the intention to make the free eye screening an annual event. He affirmed the BoT's determination to sustain the initiative "by the grace of God."
He also extended a call to action, urging well-wishers, corporate partners, and philanthropists to support future programmes. Such partnerships are vital to expanding medical outreach and other welfare initiatives across the region.
"We are delighted by the turnout and the positive response from the people of Enugu-Ezike," Agbedo said. "By bringing essential eye care free to their doorstep, we have helped restore sight, improve quality of life, and reduce barriers to care for vulnerable residents."
He expressed profound gratitude to the medical team, the ad hoc staff led by Mr. Nelson Ugochukwu Agbedo, community leaders, and all participants for the event's success.
Medical Experts and Beneficiaries Respond
The leader of the medical team, Dr. Onyinyechi Onah from The Premium Nation’s Eye Hospital, commended the Foundation for targeting underserved communities. She highlighted the clinical importance of early screening for common conditions that can lead to permanent vision loss if untreated.
One of the over 200 beneficiaries, Chief Francis Ujah, thanked the Foundation for the "golden opportunity" to access quality eye care almost at his doorstep. He offered prayers for more blessings upon the Foundation as it continues to prioritize the welfare of the needy.
