The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Federal Capital Territory Command, has forged a strategic alliance with the Abuja Metropolitan Lions Clubs, District 404-A2 Nigeria, to eradicate diabetes from its workforce.
Enhancing Personnel Wellness for National Security
This collaborative Diabetes Awareness Campaign, themed "Workplace Well-being Programme," was organized to mark this year's World Diabetes Day. The event took place at the NSCDC Command Headquarters in Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.
In his address, the FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, commended the Lions Club for their partnership, emphasizing its critical role in enhancing the health of his personnel. He highlighted that given the Corps' demanding mandate, which involves rigorous field operations, regular health checks are not just important but vital.
"Health no doubt is wealth," Dr. Odumosu stated. "I cannot take for granted the well-being of my personnel. This medical outreach is part of my agenda to ensure adequate sound health for my personnel because a healthy workforce is a productive workforce."
Early Detection and Preventive Measures
Addressing officers during the Monday Muster parade, the Lead Medical Doctor for the initiative, Lion Dr. Linda John, expressed the Club's dedication to the health of security personnel. She clarified that diabetes is a treatable condition, stressing that early detection combined with proper treatment can effectively manage the disease.
Dr. John advised personnel to adopt healthier lifestyles, including:
- Engaging in regular physical exercise.
- Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet.
- Reducing the intake of alcohol.
- Insisting on regular health check-ups.
- Adhering strictly to prescribed medications.
A Commitment to Continued Partnership
According to a press release signed by DSC Monica Ojobi, the Ag. FCT Command Public Relations Officer, the campaign featured comprehensive health talks and free diabetes screenings. These activities were aimed at promoting early detection and prevention. The event also included the presentation of free drugs to personnel.
The delegation from the Abuja Metropolitan Lions Club was led by its President, Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim. Commandant Odumosu praised the Club's long-standing record of humanitarian service and expressed his desire for more frequent such partnerships to keep his field personnel in optimal health.
