The Kano State Government has announced that it has successfully implemented approximately 90 percent of its healthcare blueprint within the first three years of Governor Abba Yusuf's administration. This disclosure was made by the Commissioner for Health, Abubakar Labaran, during a press briefing in Kano on Thursday, where he detailed the achievements recorded in the health sector.
Full Implementation of Abuja Declaration
Mr. Labaran stated that the state has fully implemented the Abuja Declaration on Health, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to improving healthcare delivery for all residents. He highlighted that the administration has sanitized admissions into health training institutions by introducing a digital process, effectively eliminating fraud that previously cost the state over N1 billion.
Revival of Personnel Training
“The government had also revived the training and retraining of healthcare personnel, restoring professionalism and credibility in the sector,” he said. Mr. Labaran noted that several health-related courses have secured accreditation from regulatory bodies, and opportunities have been created for medical doctors to advance to consultant status. These measures have strengthened healthcare institutions and improved service delivery across the state.
Free Maternal Healthcare Initiative
The commissioner revealed that maternal mortality is being tackled through free healthcare for pregnant women, including free caesarean sections in more than 30 government hospitals. Over N60 million is spent monthly to sustain this programme, ensuring access to quality maternal care. Additionally, ambulances have been provided to all 44 local government areas to support emergency services, particularly for pregnant women in labour. Furthermore, 484 mini ambulances have been procured for distribution to all wards to address transportation challenges during emergencies.
Rehabilitation of Primary Healthcare Centres
Mr. Labaran said that 320 primary healthcare centres have been rehabilitated, and the government is working to ensure every ward has a functional centre. Health personnel have been recruited through collaboration between the state and federal governments and deployed to these facilities. The government is also strengthening secondary healthcare services across the 44 LGAs.
“Drug availability in hospitals had improved significantly from 30 percent at the start of the administration through investment and prompt payment to suppliers,” he added.
Establishment of Kano State Centre for Disease Control
The establishment of the Kano State Centre for Disease Control is another major milestone, according to the commissioner. He noted that it has enhanced the state’s capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to public health emergencies. Mr. Labaran reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustaining investments to ensure accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare for all residents.
