Dr Olajumoke Okoya Olafioye, a Professor of Leadership and Inclusive Practices at the University of East London, has completed the renovation of toilet and bathroom facilities at the Oshodi Annex of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba. This initiative aims to enhance patient welfare and improve the healing environment.
Personal Inspiration Behind the Project
Olafioye stated that her motivation stemmed from personal experience, having visited a close family member admitted to the hospital for several years. Regular visits exposed her to the living conditions of patients and the challenges faced by healthcare workers. Although her relative received adequate care, she believed more could be done to improve the treatment environment.
Impact on Patient Recovery
According to Olafioye, better facilities contribute to a more positive healing process and help patients reintegrate into society more quickly. The project began four years ago, initially focusing on providing meals and spending time with patients before expanding to infrastructure improvements.
Phase One and Future Plans
The first phase involved renovating toilets and shower facilities and constructing a borehole to improve water access. Plans are underway to add more boreholes, replace mattresses, and support hospital staff with necessary resources. Olafioye emphasized that this is an ongoing project, saying, "What we have done is only the beginning. There is still a lot more to be done, and I hope more people will join in supporting vulnerable members of society."
Call for Government Investment
The academic also called on the government to increase investment in mental healthcare by upgrading facilities, providing modern equipment, and strengthening support for healthcare workers. She noted that many psychiatric patients face challenges after recovery, including lack of homes or family support systems.
Hospital Commends Partnership
Dr Oluwafunmilayo Akinola, Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, described the project as significant and impactful. She explained that the partnership began after Olafioye visited the hospital and expressed interest in supporting patients. Akinola added that the hospital remains open to partnerships with individuals and organizations willing to support mental healthcare and patient rehabilitation.
