The Ekiti State Government has taken decisive action following a controversial surgical procedure at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), resulting in the immediate dismissal of the lead surgeon.
Government Acts on Panel Report
This decision was announced on Friday, December 19, 2025, by the State Commissioner for Health & Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani. The action stems from the findings of a seven-member Panel of Enquiry, led by Professor Francis Faduyile, which was set up eleven days prior to investigate claims made by the patient, Mr. Joshua Afolayan.
The panel's detailed report was submitted to the Commissioner's office on Thursday, December 18. After a careful review, the state government approved a series of stringent measures.
Sanctions and Compensation for the Victim
The surgeon with primary responsibility for the operation has been dismissed from EKSUTH with immediate effect. Furthermore, all other members of the surgical team who were present in the theatre on the day have been suspended from duty for one month. Their case will undergo further administrative review.
In a significant move towards restitution, the Ekiti State Government has committed to bearing the full cost of a new kidney transplant for Mr. Afolayan. The government will also be responsible for his post-transplant care and related medical maintenance for a period of two years.
Systemic Reforms and Commitment to Standards
Dr. Filani stated that, in line with the panel's recommendations, a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH will be undertaken. This aims to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and ultimately, patient safety.
While expressing support for the majority of dedicated health professionals at the teaching hospital, the Commissioner issued a stern warning. He stressed that the government will not hesitate to take decisive action wherever professional standards are breached.
The government remains resolute in its commitment to protecting patients, upholding ethical and professional standards in healthcare delivery, and restoring public confidence in the state's health system, Dr. Filani emphasized.
He promised that necessary reforms would be pursued to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and to ensure EKSUTH maintains its status as a centre of excellence. The commissioner concluded by thanking the people of Ekiti for their patience and trust, reaffirming the government's unwavering commitment to quality healthcare and responsible governance.
