In a significant public health move, the Nasarawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NAPHDA) has partnered with Pathfinder International to launch a comprehensive, free cervical cancer screening and Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccination program. The initiative was officially inaugurated in Kwandere, Lafia, on November 25, 2025, to mark World Cervical Cancer Day.
The program was launched by Her Excellency Hajiya Salifat Abdullahi Sule, the First Lady of Nasarawa State. In a heartfelt appeal, she urged women across the state to actively participate in the program for the sake of their well-being and that of their children. "Health is wealth," she stated, encouraging women to utilize the free services provided by the state government and its partners.
Leadership and Collaborative Commitment
The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Gaza Gowona, represented by the Permanent Secretary Dr. John Damina, used the occasion to reaffirm the government's dedication to the health of its citizens. He promised that vaccines and essential medical equipment would be readily available at all designated treatment centers to support the initiative.
Dr. Usman Iskilu Saleh, the Executive Secretary of NAPHDA, commended the First Lady for her consistent advocacy on health matters. He highlighted that her support was instrumental in the success of previous campaigns, such as the measles and rubella vaccination, which positioned Nasarawa as a leader in vaccine administration. He also praised the Kwandere community and their traditional leader, the Sangarin Kwandere, for their cooperation.
Partner Support and Future Plans
Fatima Maho, the State Coordinator for Pathfinder International, expressed her organization's delight in collaborating with the state government. Her final call to the community was direct and action-oriented: "ensure you screen, educate, and vaccinate." She also assured residents that follow-up screening sessions are planned for the coming year, ensuring the initiative's sustainability.
Dr. Bosede Ezekiel, the World Health Organisation (WHO) State Coordinator, applauded the Nasarawa State government for creating an enabling environment for development partners to thrive. She specifically commended Pathfinder International for its pivotal role in advancing cervical cancer screening and HPV immunization efforts in the state.
Impact and Beneficiary Testimony
The immediate goal of the medical outreach is to screen over 100 women in the state. Crucially, the program includes provisions for immediate treatment for any woman who tests positive for cervical cancer, emphasizing early detection and intervention.
One of the beneficiaries, Marvellous Andrew, shared her gratitude for the timely program, which will allow her to know her cervical cancer status. This personal testimony underscores the real-world impact of the collaborative effort between NAPHDA and Pathfinder International, marking a significant step towards reducing the risk of cervical cancer and promoting long-term public health in Nasarawa State.
