Belgium, a popular destination in northwestern Europe, has released an official list of countries whose citizens can travel to the country without a visa. Among over 50 African nations, only two have made the cut: Mauritius and Seychelles.
Visa-Free Access for African Citizens
According to the Belgian government's official visa policy, citizens of Mauritius and Seychelles can enter Belgium for short stays without a visa. The list is part of Belgium's broader visa waiver program, which includes many countries from the Americas and other regions.
Out of more than 50 countries in Africa, Belgium only mentioned the names of a few popular ones. The complete list of all eligible countries can be accessed through the official Belgian immigration website.
Requirements for Visa-Free Travel
While citizens of Mauritius and Seychelles do not need a visa for short stays, they must still meet certain entry requirements, such as holding a valid passport and demonstrating the purpose of their visit. The visa-free period typically allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or family visits.
Similar Visa Policies in Other Countries
In a similar development, the Maldives published an official list of five African countries whose citizens are eligible for visa on arrival. Eligible travellers from Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Egypt, and Morocco can stay in the Maldives for up to 30 days under the visa-on-arrival scheme, provided they meet the country's entry requirements.
Meanwhile, the UAE recently outlined the application process for foreigners seeking to obtain a residence visa and live in Dubai. The report explained the requirements applicants must meet before approval, as well as the residence permit fee required to complete the application process.
Impact on Travel and Tourism
The visa-free policy for Mauritius and Seychelles is expected to boost tourism and business travel from these island nations to Belgium. It also reflects Belgium's efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with select African countries.
For citizens of other African nations, standard visa application procedures remain in place. Travellers are advised to check the latest entry requirements with the Belgian embassy or consulate in their country before planning their trip.
