Amnesty International Calls on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to Retract Violent Statement and Apologize
Amnesty International has issued a strong demand for the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to immediately withdraw what it describes as a 'violent statement' and offer a public apology. This call comes in response to remarks made by Wike during a media chat in Abuja on Friday, which have sparked widespread reactions and condemnation.
Controversial Remarks Directed at Journalist Seun Okinbaloye
The controversy stems from comments made by Wike regarding Channels Television presenter Seun Okinbaloye. During the media chat, Okinbaloye had expressed concerns about Nigeria's democratic future, warning that the 2027 elections could be dominated by a single political party due to internal crises within the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He stated that Nigeria might be 'doomed democratically' if the ADC, viewed as a viable opposition platform, fails to participate effectively in the elections.
In response, Wike made a shocking statement, saying, 'I was surprised yesterday, thoroughly surprised. If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him.' This remark was broadcast live, drawing immediate criticism from various quarters.
Amnesty International's Strong Condemnation
On Saturday, Amnesty International reacted via a post on its official X account, strongly condemning Wike's language. The organization described it as 'reckless and violent,' highlighting that it violates Nigeria's broadcasting code, which the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) is tasked with enforcing.
According to Amnesty International, Wike's statement carries the danger of normalizing violence and encouraging the targeting of journalists who are merely performing their duties. The organization emphasized that such violent intent from a member of Nigeria's federal cabinet is both unlawful and unacceptable.
Amnesty International's statement read, 'Mr. Wike stated on live television that: "If there's anyway to broke (sic) the screen, I would have shot him..." Apart from inciting violence, Wike's remarks violated Nigeria's broadcasting code.'
Broader Implications for Press Freedom and Democracy
This incident raises serious concerns about press freedom and democratic norms in Nigeria. Journalists play a crucial role in holding public officials accountable, and threats of violence against them can have a chilling effect on media independence. Amnesty International's call for Wike to withdraw his statement and apologize underscores the need for public figures to uphold the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The organization's intervention highlights the importance of protecting journalists from intimidation and ensuring that political discourse remains civil and constructive. As reactions continue to trail Wike's remarks, this case serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in safeguarding democratic principles in Nigeria.
