Cape Verde Updates Visa-Free Entry List for 2026

The government of the Republic of Cape Verde has published its updated visa exemption directory for the 2026 travel season, confirming that citizens from 19 African nations, including Nigeria, can enter the island nation without a visa. Eligible travellers are granted stays ranging from 30 to 180 days but must complete mandatory pre-registration before departure.

19 African Countries Granted Visa-Free Access

According to the official database released through the Cape Verdean government portal, the visa-exempt countries are categorized by length of stay. Three nations — Angola, Guinea-Bissau, and Mozambique — qualify for a 180-day (6-month) stay limit. Eleven countries, including Nigeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), Liberia, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo, are allowed a 90-day (3-month) stay. São Tomé and Príncipe receives a 60-day (2-month) limit, while South Africa and Morocco are restricted to a 30-day (1-month) stay.

Entry Requirements and Pre-Registration Protocol

Although citizens of these African countries are exempt from applying for a standard visa at an embassy, entry is not entirely automatic. The Cape Verdean government has laid out strict travel protocols. Before boarding, all exempt citizens must pre-register on the official Cabo Verdean EASE portal. Additionally, travellers must pay the mandatory Airport Security Tax (TSA) through the EASE portal at least five days prior to their arrival. Foreigners must hold a valid passport with at least six months of validity remaining from their date of entry. Any visitor wishing to remain beyond the allotted visa exemption period must apply for a formal extension or a regular visa at the nearest Cape Verdean embassy or consular post.

Regional Integration and Tourism Boost

As international travel and tourism continue to expand, more West African destinations are easing entry requirements to promote regional integration, tourism, and business exchange. Cape Verde's updated list reflects its commitment to fostering closer ties with fellow African nations. The inclusion of Nigeria, a major economic hub, is expected to significantly boost visitor numbers and bilateral trade.

Comparison with Other Visa Policies

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Turkey government published the full list of countries eligible for its eVisa programme in 2026, with only nine African nations making the cut. The eVisa system allows eligible travellers to complete the entire application process online without visiting a Turkish embassy or consulate in person. This contrasts with Cape Verde's visa-free approach, which still requires pre-registration and tax payment.
