The Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (CIPSMN) has formally inducted a fresh cohort of members, underscoring the critical importance of ethics, professionalism, and accountability in procurement and supply chain management across the nation.
Induction Ceremony Highlights
Speaking at the 2026 Group A induction ceremony, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute, Prof. Mohammed Aliyu, emphasized that procurement and supply chain management remain a vital link in governance at all levels. He noted that the profession plays an essential role in national development by connecting government institutions and ensuring the efficient use of public resources.
According to Aliyu, the relevance of CIPSMN is evident in its contributions to both the public and private sectors, where professionals help drive economic activities through effective supply chain systems. He also identified major challenges facing developing economies, including weak infrastructure, poor enforcement of procurement laws, and governance issues that undermine public trust.
Aliyu further stressed that the success of public programs largely depends on how well-skilled professionals manage procurement processes. "Economic, social, and environmental benefits of public programs depend greatly on how procurement and supply chain activities are conducted and controlled," he said. He highlighted the need to align procurement strategies with national economic and social goals, adding that the sector also promotes international trade and regional cooperation.
Call for Integrity and Continuous Learning
In his remarks, the President of CIPSMN, Sikiru Balogun, described the induction as more than a ceremony—it is a recognition of the inductees' dedication and readiness to contribute to national growth. Balogun urged the new members to uphold integrity, transparency, and accountability in their professional duties, noting that procurement has evolved into a strategic function that drives value and efficiency in both public and private organizations.
"Procurement and supply chain management is no longer a back-office function but a key driver of accountability and national development," he said. He encouraged the inductees to embrace continuous learning and adapt to global trends, particularly in sustainable procurement practices that consider environmental, social, and governance factors.
Appeal to Government
The institute also called on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen procurement practices by supporting professional standards and establishing necessary regulatory frameworks to curb corruption and inefficiencies in the system.
