El-Rufai Returns to ICPC Custody as Corruption Trial Adjourned for Bail Hearing
The Federal High Court in Kaduna has postponed the high-profile corruption trial involving former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai until Wednesday, April 1st, specifically to address his bail application. This development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal proceedings against the prominent political figure.

El-Rufai is currently facing prosecution by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on ten distinct counts related to corruption allegations. The former governor had been in ICPC custody since February 19th before receiving temporary release on March 28th on compassionate grounds following his mother's passing in Cairo, Egypt. His mother was subsequently laid to rest in Abuja on Sunday.
During a brief court session preceding the adjournment, defense lawyers initially requested that presiding judge Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa recuse himself from the case, citing potential bias and referencing a pending petition against the judge. However, in a notable legal reversal, the defense team later filed a motion to withdraw their request for the judge's recusal.
Parallel Legal Proceedings and Security Measures
In a separate but related development, the ICPC had previously initiated trial proceedings against El-Rufai at the Kaduna State High Court alongside businessman Amadu Sule. The charges in that case include allegations of abuse of position, fraud, attempted fraud, and conferring undue advantage to others. Justice Darius Khobo, presiding over that matter, has scheduled the trial to resume on April 10th.
El-Rufai's legal representative, Ukpong Abang, declined to comment on the proceedings in either court, explaining that additional legal steps and document filings were still pending. Meanwhile, journalists were barred from entering the courtrooms during the hearings, and security around the court buildings was exceptionally tight.

The heightened security measures included armed officers stationed along the Anguwan Sarki to Kawo Road, with partial road closures causing significant traffic congestion. These transportation disruptions proved particularly burdensome for commuters already grappling with elevated fuel prices, creating additional challenges for those attempting to navigate the area.

These remarks came as the former governor continues to face legal battles and detention over alleged graft.
