El-Rufai Confronts Dual Corruption Cases in Federal and State Courts
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is preparing to arraign former Kaduna State governor, Nasir el-Rufai, before the Federal High Court in Kaduna today on a series of corruption-related allegations. He will be docked alongside Joel Adoga in a case marked FHC/KD/73/2026, which includes charges of alleged conversion and possession of public property, as well as money laundering.
Parallel Legal Proceedings Initiated by Anti-Graft Agency
In a parallel legal development, the anti-graft agency has also filed a separate charge against the former governor and Amadu Sule before a Kaduna State High Court. This case, numbered KDH/KAD/ICPC/01/26, contains allegations ranging from abuse of office and fraud to intent to commit fraud and conferring undue advantage.
According to the commission, both charges were instituted on March 18, 2026, as part of its ongoing efforts to prosecute corruption and enforce accountability in public office. While the arraignment date at the State High Court has yet to be fixed, the ICPC confirmed that el-Rufai has been duly served with the charges in both matters.
ICPC Reaffirms Commitment to Due Process and Rule of Law
In a statement released by the anti-graft agency’s Head of Media and Public Communication, John Okor Odey, the commission reiterated its commitment to due process and adherence to the rule of law. The statement assured the public that the prosecution would be conducted in accordance with established legal procedures, emphasizing transparency and fairness in the judicial process.
Atiku Abubakar Demands Immediate Release of El-Rufai from Custody
However, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has demanded the immediate release of the ex-governor from ICPC custody. In a post on his X page yesterday, the chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) argued that no individual should be detained on the basis of political differences or ideological affiliations.
"I wish to serve notice to the authorities detaining former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and all other political detainees to release them henceforth," Abubakar wrote. "No one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day," he added.
The erstwhile Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister has been in the custody of the anti-graft agency since February 19, 2026, after he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This ongoing detention has sparked debates about political motivations and the integrity of anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria.
