FG Urges Media to Hold Power Accountable with Fairness and Professionalism
The Federal Government has issued a strong appeal to the media, urging them to hold public office holders accountable with fairness, professionalism, and a profound sense of responsibility. This charge was delivered by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).
Balanced Journalism Critical for Democracy
Minister Idris stressed that balanced journalism remains absolutely critical to deepening democracy and strengthening public trust in governance. He emphasized that while the media must continue to scrutinize those in power, it must do so in a manner that promotes fairness, national unity, and informed public discourse. "Responsible journalism is not only about exposing wrongdoing but also about providing context and encouraging constructive engagement," Idris stated.
He further explained that the reforms being pursued by the ministry are aimed at promoting openness, transparency, and citizen engagement, while ensuring that media institutions remain both responsive to the public and responsible in their conduct. In an era of rampant misinformation and disinformation, the role of credible media organizations has become even more vital, the minister noted, warning that the speed of information flow today requires journalists to be more careful, professional, and ethical in their work.
FRCN's Landmark Anniversary and Role
Describing the FRCN's 75th anniversary as a landmark in Nigeria's broadcasting history, Idris highlighted that the corporation has remained a constant voice through the country's defining moments. "For three-quarters of a century, FRCN has done more than broadcasting; it has uplifted the people and united the nation," he said, characterizing FRCN as a companion of Nigeria's independence and a witness to its national journey over the decades.
He urged the public broadcaster to continue amplifying the voices of ordinary Nigerians while using its reach to promote constructive national conversation and accountability. The minister also reflected on the current state of the information sector, noting it has received renewed attention recently. He called on stakeholders to move away from complaints and focus on improving standards and performance, expressing optimism that funding and support would continue to improve. "We have done enough lamentation. There is no longer room for lamentation. Whether we have money or not, we must improve what we do," Idris asserted.
Infrastructure Upgrades and Future Commitments
Idris outlined ongoing infrastructure upgrades within FRCN, including the installation of new 50-kilowatt transmitters in Kaduna, Ibadan, Enugu, and Gwagwalada to expand coverage and ensure wider access to information. "These upgrades are a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian is left uninformed, regardless of location," he said. According to him, the unveiling of the 75th anniversary logo represents not just a celebration of the past but a commitment to a stronger future for public broadcasting.
Praise from Veteran Journalist
Also speaking at the event, veteran journalist and statesman, Babagana Kingibe, who was invited to cast the 4 o'clock news as part of the anniversary activities, praised the evolution of broadcasting in Nigeria. "I am very happy and proud to see the evolution of broadcasting in Nigeria, adapting very well to changes in technology and development of the industry worldwide," Kingibe said. The former Vice President noted that the industry has moved from regional broadcasting structures to a unified national system that is now part of a global media space, reflecting resilience and adaptability over time.
Earlier, the Director-General of FRCN, Mohammed Bulama, outlined measures taken to reposition the corporation in line with modern broadcasting realities, underscoring the ongoing efforts to enhance its role in Nigeria's media landscape.
