Federal Government Calls on Media to Ensure Fair and Professional Accountability
The Federal Government has issued a strong appeal to the media, urging them to hold public office holders accountable with a commitment to fairness, professionalism, and a profound sense of responsibility. This charge was delivered by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, during a media briefing held in Abuja. The event was organized ahead of the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), highlighting the government's focus on enhancing democratic principles through responsible journalism.
Emphasis on Balanced Journalism and National Unity
Minister Idris stressed that balanced journalism is not merely an option but a critical necessity for deepening democracy and strengthening public trust in governance. He articulated that while the media must continue to scrutinize those in power, it should do so in a manner that promotes fairness, fosters national unity, and encourages informed public discourse. Idris elaborated that responsible journalism extends beyond exposing wrongdoing; it involves providing context, encouraging constructive engagement, and ensuring that reporting contributes positively to societal development.
He specifically addressed FRCN, describing it as a public broadcaster with a duty to amplify the voices of ordinary Nigerians. Idris emphasized that FRCN should leverage its extensive reach to promote constructive national conversations and uphold accountability, thereby serving as a pillar of democratic integrity. Reflecting on the corporation's legacy, he noted that FRCN has been a constant voice through Nigeria's defining moments, from independence to the present day, making it a companion and witness to the nation's journey over the decades.
Renewed Focus on the Information Sector and Digital Transformation
Idris also commented on the current state of the information sector, which he said has received renewed attention in recent times. He urged stakeholders to shift away from complaints and instead focus on improving standards and performance. Expressing optimism, he anticipated that funding and support for the sector would continue to improve, enabling better service delivery and innovation.
In a related development, the Director General of FRCN, Mohammed Bulama, outlined strategic measures taken to reposition the corporation in alignment with modern broadcasting realities. He disclosed that FRCN has embraced digital transformation through the introduction of new platforms, including an online radio service, a web application, and a mobile app. These initiatives are aimed at reaching wider and younger audiences, ensuring that the corporation remains relevant in an increasingly digital age.
Celebrating Broadcasting Legacy and Future Prospects
During the briefing, veteran journalist and statesman Babagana Kingibe, who was invited to cast the 4 o'clock news as part of the anniversary activities, praised the evolution of broadcasting in Nigeria. He highlighted the significant role that media organizations like FRCN have played in shaping public opinion and fostering national cohesion over the years.
The 75th anniversary celebration is expected to feature a series of activities later in the year, culminating in a broader event designed to honor past contributors, celebrate excellence in broadcasting, and chart a forward-looking path for the industry in Nigeria. This milestone underscores the enduring importance of media in promoting accountability and democratic values, as reinforced by the Federal Government's call for fairness and professionalism in journalistic practices.
