ICPC Arrests Former Governor El-Rufai’s Personal Physician

Operatives of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) have arrested Professor Bello Abubakar, the personal physician of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The arrest follows allegations that Abubakar misled the ICPC regarding the nature of El-Rufai’s medical attendance at the National Hospital in Abuja.

According to reports by Nigerian Affairs, the ICPC discovered that El-Rufai was not undergoing medical treatment as claimed but was instead holding a meeting with Isa Ashiru Kudan, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State. The commission stated that the arranged medical visit was used for activities outside the scope contemplated by the court and the ICPC.

El-Rufai Accused of Violating Court-Approved Conditions

The ICPC accused El-Rufai of breaching the conditions of a court-approved medical visit while in the commission’s custody, as reported by The Punch. The commission had granted El-Rufai permission for a medical check-up, but surveillance revealed that he used the opportunity to engage in political discussions.

This development adds to the ongoing legal battles facing the former governor, who has been under ICPC investigation for alleged corrupt practices during his tenure. The arrest of his physician underscores the commission’s determination to enforce compliance with custody conditions.

As of now, Professor Abubakar remains in ICPC custody, and further investigations are underway. The commission has not released an official statement regarding the arrest, but sources confirm that Abubakar is being questioned for his role in facilitating the unauthorized meeting.
