Israel Visa-Free: 7 African Countries Exempted

Israel Publishes Visa Exemption List for Tourists

Israel has officially published its tourist visa exemption table, revealing seven African countries whose citizens can enter the country without obtaining a visa in advance. The list includes more than 50 countries worldwide, but only seven from Africa made the cut.

African Countries Exempt from Tourist Visa

The African nations whose passport holders are exempt from tourist visa obligations are: Botswana, Central African Republic, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, and Swaziland (Eswatini).

Key Conditions for Visa-Free Travel

The Israeli government stated that the exemption applies strictly to national and official passports. Holders of other travel documents do not qualify for the waiver and must apply through standard visa channels. Travellers are advised to check whether they require a Tourist Visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA-IL) before booking flights. Where ETA-IL applies, applicants must complete an online application and submit payment at least a few days before departure.

Visa Process for Non-Exempt African Nationals

For African nationals not on the exemption list, a tourist visa application process exists. Israeli citizens or residents can apply on behalf of a foreigner they wish to invite. Supporting documents typically include a copy of the foreigner's passport, a liability document stating purpose and duration of visit, and evidence of the relationship between host and guest. A service fee of 100 NIS applies.

Impact for African Travellers

For citizens of the seven listed nations, the exemption removes a significant bureaucratic hurdle, allowing them to plan trips without the need for a consulate visit or visa application file, provided they hold a valid national passport. The rest of the African continent remains outside the exemption arrangement and must follow the standard visa application route for tourism purposes.
