NDLEA Smashes Meth Cartel in Ogun, Arrests Mexican Barons and Others

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has delivered a significant blow to transnational organized crime by dismantling a sophisticated Nigerian-Mexican methamphetamine production syndicate. The operation, carried out by elite operatives of the Agency’s Special Operations Unit (SOU), led to the shutdown of an industrial-scale clandestine laboratory in a remote forest in Ijebu, Ogun State. This is the largest meth lab ever discovered in Nigeria, and the seizure includes the biggest multi-billion naira meth haul in history. The cartel’s kingpin, three Mexican technical experts, and six top local collaborators were arrested.

Details of the Operation

At a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, 20th May 2026, NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), revealed that following months of painstaking intelligence gathering, operatives launched well-coordinated strikes across Ogun and Lagos States within 48 hours last week. He stated, “Barely two weeks ago, we announced the successful takedown of a high-profile Drug Trafficking Organisation (DTO) headed by Simon Amadi. Today, I am proud to announce that the NDLEA has struck another crippling blow to transnational organised crime.”

Marwa explained that the network was not just trafficking drugs but actively manufacturing industrial-scale quantities of lethal illicit substances on Nigerian soil, threatening national security and public health. On Saturday, 16th May 2026, operatives launched a simultaneous strike in both Ogun and Lagos States. The primary target was a remote farm at Abidagba forest in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, used as a massive clandestine methamphetamine laboratory by the Anochili Innocent Drug Trafficking Organisation (DTO). Simultaneously, another tactical team closed in on the mastermind’s luxury fortress at No. 8 Tafawa Balewa Street, Golf Estate, Lakowe, Lekki, Lagos State.

Arrests and Seizures

At the farm in Ijebu forest, operatives apprehended seven key members of the cartel, including three Mexican nationals brought in specifically to cook the deadly substance. The suspects arrested in the forest lab are: Nwankwo Sunday Christian (41), Igwe Abuchi Remijus (42), Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua (23), Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor (38), and the three Mexican meth experts: Martinez Felix Nemecto (46), Jesus López Valles (40), and Torrero Juan Carlos (51). Meanwhile, the drug baron, Anochili Innocent, was arrested at his residence in Lekki. A search of his premises led to the recovery of international passports and mobile phones of the Mexican cooks, linking him to the importation of foreign criminals.

Follow-up operations on Monday, 18th May 2026, led to the arrest of another syndicate member, Kingsley Orike Omonughwa (44), at House 70, Close 3, Mayfair Estate, Lakowe, Lekki. Investigators also stormed the residence of Emeka Nwobum, which served as the cartel’s stash house. The total number of cartel members in custody is now 10, including the baron, three Mexican specialists, and six Nigerian collaborators.

Massive Seizure of Methamphetamine

Marwa disclosed that the operation yielded a massive 2,419.48 kilograms (over 2.4 tons) of chemical materials, including highly toxic, volatile, and crystallised methamphetamine worth $362,922,000.00 (over N480 billion) in the international market. Also recovered were a Toyota Tacoma vehicle used for operations at the clandestine lab and a Toyota Highlander seized from the kingpin’s residence. Marwa emphasised, “The 2,419.48 kilograms of finished and liquid methamphetamine seized represents millions of street doses that would have flooded our communities and international markets, causing untold destruction.”

Warning to Drug Cartels

Marwa noted that the dismantling of the Anochili Innocent DTO sends a clear message to drug barons that Nigeria is a hostile territory for their business. He warned, “We are fully aware of the shifting tactics of these cartels, including hiring South American cartel specialists to set up production factories in rural communities. No matter how deep into the bush you hide, the NDLEA will hunt you down.” He commended the bravery and professionalism of the NDLEA SOU operatives and the Chemical and Forensic Team, and urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
