NERC Orders Compensation for Band A Customers Hit by Grid Constraints
NERC Orders Compensation for Band A Customers

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a directive mandating special compensation for eligible Band A customers who experienced generation shortfalls between February and March 2026, caused by gas supply shortages and infrastructure vandalism.

Compensation Details

According to a public notice released on Thursday, affected feeders that were supposed to receive 18 hours of daily supply but got less will qualify for compensation. Feeders with an average supply of 18 to 20 hours will follow existing compensation rules under Addendum No. NERC/2024/003. For feeders with less than 18 hours of supply, customers will not be downgraded and will receive special compensation: Non-MD customers get 20% of the approved February 2026 energy cap, while MD customers get 20% of the average energy billed per MD customer in February 2026.

Mode of Compensation

Prepaid customers will receive token credits, while postpaid customers will get bill adjustments. The compensation for February 2026 must be completed by 31 May 2026, and for March 2026 by 30 June 2026.

Customer Protections

Distribution companies are prohibited from using compensation credits to offset existing customer debts. Customers must be clearly informed of the value and period of compensation received. NERC will monitor implementation and verify compliance to ensure all eligible customers receive their due compensation.
