NFSS Seeks EFCC Partnership to Strengthen Anti-Corruption Efforts in Nigeria
The Nigerian Forest Security Service (NFSS) has formally requested collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to enhance the fight against corruption, economic offenses, and financial crimes across the country. This appeal was made during a courtesy visit by NFSS Commander-General Adewole Joshua Osatimehin, who led a management delegation to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede at the Commission's corporate headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
Commendation and Vision for Collaboration
During the meeting, Osatimehin praised Olukoyede's leadership, particularly noting successes in prosecuting high-profile corrupt individuals who were previously considered untouchable. "We are here today after considering your vision for this organisation. Since you took over, high-profile individuals who thought they were untouchable were brought to book, and Nigeria is feeling the impact. We want to be part of your success story," he stated. Osatimehin highlighted the NFSS's extensive grassroots presence, which could significantly aid the EFCC in intelligence gathering nationwide. He specifically appealed for capacity-building initiatives for NFSS personnel, focusing on investigative skills to bolster their effectiveness in anti-corruption efforts.
EFCC's Response and Emphasis on Synergy
In his remarks, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede welcomed the NFSS's desire to collaborate, emphasizing the importance of collective action in ensuring national security. "Everybody must be involved in ensuring security in Nigeria. Even at the private level. Provided they can offer value, we can work together. Anyone who understands what is going on in our forests today knows there is a need for synergy with forest guards," he said. Olukoyede expressed concern that forests have become safe havens for criminal elements and stressed the necessity for collaborative efforts among all stakeholders. He assured the delegation of the EFCC's willingness to partner with organizations whose mandates align with its own, particularly in areas like investigation and crime prevention.

Olukoyede granted the NFSS's request for capacity building in investigation techniques, underscoring the EFCC's commitment to strengthening institutional capabilities. This move is expected to enhance the NFSS's role in supporting anti-corruption initiatives, leveraging their local presence to complement the EFCC's broader enforcement strategies.
