NHRC Chief Urges Federal Government to Address Root Causes of Violence

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has issued a strong appeal to the Federal Government, urging it to confront the deep-seated drivers of recurring violence in Nigeria. He specifically highlighted poverty, inequality, and hate speech as critical factors that must be addressed to end the cycles of killings plaguing the nation.

Condemnation of Recent Attacks in Plateau State

Reacting to the latest wave of attacks in Jos, Plateau State, Ojukwu condemned what he described as senseless and brutal killings. He noted that these incidents are part of a troubling pattern observed in other hotspots, including Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara states. We strongly condemn these killings and extend our condolences to the families of victims, he said, emphasizing that the right to life remains non-negotiable.

Call for Structural Interventions Beyond Security Measures

Beyond immediate security responses, Ojukwu stressed that long-term prevention requires structural interventions. There is an urgent need to address underlying factors that fuel this violence, such as poverty, inequality and hate speech. Without this, we risk a continuation of these tragic occurrences, he warned. He called on the Federal Government to take decisive steps to halt the attacks and ensure accountability, cautioning that impunity is emboldening perpetrators.

Demands for Justice and Humanitarian Support

Ojukwu urged security agencies to intensify operations in affected communities, including deploying additional personnel to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable populations. The NHRC further demanded a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of suspects, noting that visible justice would serve as a deterrent. On humanitarian response, he emphasized the need for comprehensive support for victims and survivors, including:

  • Compensation for affected families
  • Medical care for the injured
  • Protection for displaced persons

Appeal for Coordinated Action at Federal and State Levels

While commending steps taken by the Plateau State Government, Ojukwu insisted that more coordinated action is required at both federal and state levels. The victims must not be forgotten. Justice must be served, and proactive measures must be taken to ensure that such tragedies do not recur, he stated. In a statement by Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, the commission reiterated its commitment to human rights advocacy, declaring: No more bloodshed in this country.
