The decision was made public by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement released on Monday.
Evacuation Details
The evacuation will be carried out via special flights arranged by the Nigerian government, with the first batch of citizens expected to arrive in Nigeria within the week. The ministry urged all Nigerian citizens in South Africa who wish to return home to register with the Nigerian consulate in Johannesburg or the embassy in Pretoria.
Registration Process
Affected citizens are required to provide their full names, passport details, and contact information. The government has assured that the process will be streamlined to ensure a swift and orderly evacuation.
This move comes after several attacks on foreign-owned businesses and properties in South Africa, leading to the deaths of at least two Nigerians and the destruction of property worth millions of naira. The Nigerian government has condemned the attacks and called on South African authorities to protect foreign nationals.
Government Response
In addition to the evacuation, Nigeria has summoned the South African ambassador to express its displeasure over the incidents. The government has also called for a meeting of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission to address the underlying issues.
