NLC Demands Responsive Governance, Urges End to Workers' Plight This Easter

The Nigeria Labour Congress has issued a strong demand for a more humane and responsive governance system that is firmly anchored on the needs of the people. In a powerful Easter message, the labor union urged the government to become more sensitive to the severe plight facing Nigerian workers and the general populace across the nation.

Easter Message: A Call for Sacrificial Service

The NLC's Easter message, titled 'This Easter: A Cross For Liberty!', was signed by the Congress President, Joe Ajaero. It argues forcefully that the use of state power to suppress workers' fundamental rights, silence legitimate dissent, or impose harsh austerity measures that primarily benefit a tiny elite while crushing the majority constitutes a profound betrayal of leadership's very essence. This approach, according to the NLC, completely negates the true spirit of the Easter season.

The congress called on Nigerian leaders to learn critical lessons from the symbolism of the Cross. They urged those in authority to stop viewing governance as an opportunity for primitive accumulation of wealth and power. Instead, leadership must be seen as a platform for genuine sacrificial service to the citizenry.

Policies as Tools of Liberation, Not Oppression

According to the NLC, it is absolutely imperative that individuals occupying positions of leadership understand that government policies must function as tools of liberation for the masses, not as weapons of oppression against them. Drawing a parallel to the biblical narrative, the NLC stated that just as Christ at the Cross destroyed the hold darkness had over humanity, making a public spectacle of oppressive forces, the Nigerian government must use its constitutional power to break the chokeholds that poverty, exploitation, rampant insecurity, and catastrophic infrastructure collapse have on the Nigerian people.

The labor congress highlighted the soaring cost of transportation as a particularly heavy yoke on the necks of workers. This crisis devours workers' already meager wages, steals their valuable time through long commutes, and reduces their daily existence to a relentless struggle for mere survival.

Electricity Crisis as Mass Disempowerment

Furthermore, the NLC stated that the pervasive absence of reliable electricity, which induces darkness across the nation, is not merely a technical failure. It is, in their view, a deliberate weapon of mass disempowerment wielded against the populace. "It cripples our industries, kills our small businesses, and plunges our homes into darkness, making it impossible for the working class to live with any semblance of dignity," the message declared.

The NLC demanded that the acute pains of today be transformed into a tangible victory for the people through the urgent implementation of specific policies. These include:

  • Restoring and subsidizing public transportation systems.
  • Ending the perennial electricity crisis once and for all.
  • Stopping the widespread killings and insecurity.
  • Placing the welfare of the masses decisively above the profits of a privileged few.

Contrasting Sacrifices: Divine vs. Political

The NLC described the Easter season as not merely a religious ritual but a profound moment of ideological clarity. It serves as a reminder that God's infinite love for humanity was demonstrated not in abstract words, but through the ultimate act of sacrifice: the giving of His only begotten Son, Jesus, to break the chains of sin and death.

Noting that the sacrifice of Jesus at Calvary was made for the redemption of others, not for personal gain, the NLC drew a stark contrast. "In contrast, the sacrifices demanded of Nigerian workers today are ones we never consented to," the statement added. These include:

  1. The sacrifice of wages on the altar of corporate and governmental profiteering.
  2. The sacrifice of personal safety on the altar of state-sponsored insecurity.
  3. The sacrifice of lives on the altar of missed opportunities to govern effectively.

The NLC criticized the fact that this occurs while many political leaders hide in armored vehicles or surround themselves with heavy security details, refusing to make any significant personal or political sacrifices for the nation they are meant to serve. The message concludes as a clarion call for a fundamental shift in governance philosophy, aligning it with the sacrificial and liberating spirit commemorated during Easter.
