NHRC Chief Demands Structural Reforms to Halt Nigeria's Recurring Violence
The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu (SAN), has issued a stark warning to the Federal Government, urging immediate action to confront the deep-seated drivers of ongoing violence across Nigeria. In a powerful statement, Ojukwu emphasized that without addressing fundamental issues such as poverty, inequality, and hate speech, the country will continue to suffer from relentless cycles of bloodshed and killings.
Condemnation of Recent Attacks in Plateau State
Reacting to the latest wave of brutal attacks in Jos, Plateau State, Ojukwu condemned the senseless violence through a statement delivered by the Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed. He described these killings as part of a disturbing pattern that has plagued other hotspots, including Benue, Kaduna, and Zamfara states. "We strongly condemn these killings and extend our condolences to the families of victims," Ojukwu stated, reaffirming that the right to life is non-negotiable and must be protected at all costs.
Call for Long-Term Prevention and Accountability
Beyond immediate security responses, Ojukwu stressed that sustainable prevention requires structural interventions. "There is an urgent need to address underlying factors that fuel this violence, such as poverty, inequality, and hate speech. Without this, we risk a continuation of these tragic occurrences," he declared. He called on the Federal Government to take decisive steps to halt the attacks and ensure accountability, warning that impunity only emboldens perpetrators. "Enough is enough. The government must act now to stop these atrocities and bring those responsible to justice. The silence is deafening," Ojukwu asserted.
Security and Justice Measures
Ojukwu urged security agencies to intensify their operations in affected communities, including deploying additional personnel to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable populations. The NHRC further demanded thorough investigations and swift prosecutions of suspects, noting that visible justice would serve as a crucial deterrent to future violence. On humanitarian efforts, Ojukwu emphasized the need for comprehensive support for victims and survivors, including compensation, medical care, and protection for displaced persons.
Coordination Between Federal and State Governments
While commending steps taken by the Plateau State government, Ojukwu insisted that more coordinated action is required at both federal and state levels. "The victims must not be forgotten.
