Bishop Goodluck Akpede, President of the Peace and Conflict Resolution Organisation of Nigeria, has stated that addressing the ownership, control and management of the nation's natural resources is crucial to maintaining peace and stability in Nigeria. He made this remark on World Peace Day in Kaduna, at an event organised by the National Peacemakers Initiatives.
Resource Control Linked to Crises
Akpede said most of the crises in Nigeria are related to wealth and resource control. He explained that good natural resource management can play a central role in building sustainable peace in the country. The cleric also stressed that Nigeria must develop capacity for non-violent conflict resolution to avoid frequent clashes.
Youth Engagement and Social Amenities
Also speaking at the event, Rafiu Ladipo, President General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, called for the provision of social amenities and job opportunities to engage youths. He argued that when youths are engaged, they will not embrace violence. Ladipo urged the ruling class to emulate the virtues of Nigeria's founding fathers, stating, "this nation cannot be divided no matter what happens. This nation must remain one."
Call for Sustainable Peace
The statements underscore growing concerns over resource-related conflicts and the need for inclusive governance. Both leaders emphasised the importance of addressing underlying issues to ensure lasting peace and stability in the country.
