The Nigerian Senate has strongly criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for his call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area. During plenary on Tuesday, July 14, lawmakers asked the governor to refrain from trivializing a serious and traumatic incident.
Governor's Call for UN Investigation
Governor Makinde, in a statewide broadcast on Monday, July 13, urged the United Nations and international human rights bodies to probe the circumstances surrounding the abduction. He argued that the incident warranted global attention to ensure accountability and prevent future occurrences.
Senate's Reaction
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, a former Edo State governor, described Makinde's demand as “not statesmanly and politics taken too far.” He emphasized that the rescue operation should not be undermined by seeking external investigations. The Senate unanimously voted to condemn Makinde's call, urging him to withdraw the request and focus on supporting local security efforts.
The lawmakers stressed that the matter should be handled domestically, as Nigeria's security agencies are capable of conducting a thorough investigation. The Senate's resolution reflects a broader concern over politicizing security issues in the country.
