UK Releases New Statement on Ekiti Guber Polls, Praises Peaceful Conduct
UK Praises Peaceful Ekiti Guber Polls, Raises Concerns

The British High Commission in Abuja has welcomed the conduct of the Ekiti State governorship election and congratulated Governor Biodun Oyebanji on his re-election. In a statement released on Monday, June 22, 2026, via its X handle @UKinNigeria, the UK observers noted positive collaboration between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials and security agencies, which played an important role in ensuring voting was mostly peaceful on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

UK Observers Commend Prioritisation of Vulnerable Voters

The UK team commended the prioritisation of vulnerable voters at several polling units. However, they stated that the physical location and set-up of most polling units visited were inaccessible to voters with disabilities. The observers also raised concerns about instances of vote trading and technical issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) at some polling units.

Concerns Over BVAS Delays and Vote Trading

“Our observers also noted delays to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) at some polling units, which slowed down voting. Technical issues risk undermining voter confidence in electoral systems and can discourage turnout,” the statement read. “Our observation team were concerned to see instances of vote trading and interference by party agents at polling units visited. Vote trading erodes public confidence and undermines the democratic process. We call on all actors to take urgent steps to address this corrosive practice.”

Lessons for Osun and 2027 General Elections

The British High Commission urged all stakeholders, including INEC, security agencies, and political actors, to take on board the lessons from Ekiti as the next off-cycle election approaches in Osun State. “The credibility of the next elections will be vital - for public confidence in democratic institutions, for Nigeria's continued progress, and for its leadership role across Africa,” the statement added.

President Tinubu Reacts to Oyebanji's Victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated Governor Oyebanji on his victory and urged him to unite the people of Ekiti State. Tinubu also commended law enforcement for ensuring a peaceful election. The Federal Government promised support for Governor Oyebanji's administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

UK-Nigeria Partnership Ahead of 2027

The British High Commission emphasised that its partnership with Nigeria remains as important as ever ahead of the 2027 general elections. The UK observers highlighted the importance of free, fair, and peaceful elections for Nigeria's democratic process, noting that support for Nigeria's democracy is key to the enduring UK-Nigeria partnership.
