Abdulsalami's Brother Wins APC Reps Primary in Niger

The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its House of Representatives primary elections across Nigeria on May 16 and 17, 2026, producing winners and losers ahead of the 2027 general elections. In Niger State, Adamu Abubakar, the younger brother of former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, emerged victorious in the Chanchaga Federal Constituency primary.

Adamu Abubakar Wins Chanchaga APC Ticket

Adamu Abubakar secured the APC House of Representatives ticket for Chanchaga Federal Constituency after polling 30,650 votes. He defeated his closest rival, Mr. Nmaa Ahmed, who garnered 1,271 votes. Another contestant, Mr. Shuaibu Mairago, received 311 votes. The Returning Officer, AbdulMumin Attahiru, announced the results following the conduct of the primary across all 11 wards of the constituency. Abubakar was declared the APC candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.

Abdullahi Mahmud Wins Lapai Primary

In Lapai Federal Constituency, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmud won the APC primary election with 8,559 votes. The Returning Officer, Ibrahim Usman, declared Mahmud the winner after the exercise was conducted across the 10 wards of the constituency. Sadiqu Mustapha scored 395 votes, while Mahawiya Yusuf polled 247 votes. Usman returned Mahmud as the APC candidate for the 2027 elections.

Yakubu Auna Wins Magama/Rijau Primary

Professor Yakubu Auna emerged as the winner of the APC primary election for Magama/Rijau Federal Constituency. The results were announced by the returning officer, who confirmed Auna's victory in the exercise.

APC Primaries: Winners and Losers Emerge

The APC concluded its House of Representatives primaries nationwide, with high voter turnout and largely peaceful conduct. However, some areas reported protests and disputes. Prominent figures such as Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Lagos Assembly Speaker Mudasiru Obasa secured their tickets. The party also released a list of aspirants disqualified from participating in the primaries, with Ondo and Rivers states recording the highest number of disqualified candidates. No reasons were provided for the disqualifications.

These primaries set the stage for the 2027 general elections, with the APC aiming to retain its majority in the House of Representatives.
