ADC Holds State Congress in Enugu, Elects New Leadership Through Consensus
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) convened a significant state congress over the weekend in Enugu, adopting a consensus arrangement that resulted in the election of Prof Augustine Akubua as the new State Chairman, alongside 45 other leaders. This pivotal event, held at the Igbozurume venue, drew a massive crowd of party members and supporters, creating an electrifying atmosphere as aspirants and their backers paraded in a show of readiness for upcoming electoral contests.
Consensus Approach and Leadership Inauguration
Dr Christian Okeke, the Enugu State Chairman of the Congress Committee, explained that the consensus option was chosen after a series of meetings with party leaders across the state. He meticulously presented the leadership list, organized according to Enugu's 17 local government areas, and officially swore in the new officials to advance the party's objectives. While noting a minor dissent from Enugu East Local Government, Okeke advised affected leaders to utilize the party's appeal channels for resolution.
In his remarks, Okeke expressed gratitude for the support received during the congress and urged the new leadership to demonstrate magnanimity in victory. He emphasized, "The ADC has come to stay as a veritable alternative, and irrespective of the leadership crisis at the centre, the party is strong and entrenched. You must continue to abide by rules and regulations to deepen this party." He further highlighted that the consensus process involved consultations with leaders and stakeholders from ward to state levels, ensuring a unified approach.
Confidence in 2027 Electoral Success
Former Enugu State Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo, speaking at the congress, voiced strong confidence that the ADC would seize power in the state during the 2027 elections and implement enhanced governance. He underscored that the congress aimed to elect credible leaders to steer the party for the next four years, attributing the ADC's resilience to its commitment to internal democracy.
Nwodo stated, "ADC believes in internal democracy, and that has made our structure very formidable. Everyone was given the opportunity to elect their leaders from the polling unit to the ward, local government, and now the state level. With this inclusive process, there will be unity, and with that unity, I am confident that we will change the present government in Enugu State and install a better one."
New Chairman's Vision and Aspirants' Optimism
In his acceptance speech, newly elected State Chairman Prof Augustine Akubua described the peaceful congress as a sign that a new Nigeria is achievable. He outlined his vision to chart a new course, involve all members, and focus on politics and policies that benefit the people. Akubua declared, "We understand the message: our people are simply saying that the government in the state has disappointed them. We shall work to enthrone good governance. Going forward, we shall abhor the use of thuggery and embrace intellectual welfare to create new dynamics in politics."
Several party aspirants, including Ogochukwu Onyema, Kingsley Nweke, and Ikechukwu Ezeugwu, expressed optimism about the ADC's prospects in the 2027 general elections, dismissing current crises as imaginary attempts to undermine the party. They encouraged members to remain steadfast and continue their support, asserting that any challenges would soon be overcome.
The congress also featured the unanimous election of delegates for the ADC's national convention, reinforcing the party's organizational strength and strategic preparations for future political engagements in Enugu State and beyond.
