ADC Announces Opposition Alliance to Challenge Tinubu in 2027 Presidential Race
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has made a significant political declaration, stating that prominent opposition figures Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi are actively working together with a unified objective: to prevent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from securing another term in the 2027 general election.
Launch of the 1ADC Movement as Unifying Platform
This announcement coincided with the official unveiling of 1ADC, a new political movement specifically designed to consolidate members and supporters across diverse age groups, social backgrounds, and political interests. The movement represents the party's strategic preparation to mount a formidable challenge against the ruling party in the upcoming presidential contest.
The development marks one of the earliest concerted efforts by opposition figures to rally around a single, cohesive platform ahead of the 2027 election, which is already emerging as a potential major showdown with President Tinubu and the APC's political machinery.
Leadership Statements on Unity and Strategy
During the unveiling ceremony, National Coordinator of the 1ADC Movement, Lauretta Onochie, alongside former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, addressed attendees about the initiative's purpose and vision.
"We are here to inform the world, the state, and our political leaders that we have come together to be united as one ADC," Onochie stated emphatically.
She elaborated that the platform would ensure supporters of Obi, Atiku, and Amaechi could collaborate effectively as a coordinated team to confront the APC in 2027. "Because Nigerians are asking an important question as to whether political parties can come together and unite, today we are here to say it is possible and we are taking that lead," she added.
Onochie acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable within political movements but stressed that the party's collective goal must take precedence over individual interests. "We will unite after the primaries, we will heal the wounds and we will not encourage anti-party activities. We will reach the grassroots, we will reach the poor and the young, and we will be a party for everyone. We will be strong, disciplined and united," she assured.
She further explained that the movement was created to minimize friction and divisions among party leaders and aspirants while simultaneously mobilizing Nigerian citizens ahead of the 2027 general election.
ADC's Transformation into a Citizens' Platform
Former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu provided additional context, stating that adopting the party as a coalition platform was intended to give Nigerians the opportunity to reclaim their country. "We say we don't want to continue complaining. It is not about who is the national chairman or national secretary. The leadership of the ADC has been very deliberate. They don't want to stand on anybody's face. They want Nigerian citizens to take over the party," Nwosu declared.
He urged Nigerians to take decisive action to prevent the nation from sliding into deeper crisis following the 2027 elections. Nwosu also characterized the party's National Chairman, David Mark, as a "military tactician" who would not be intimidated by any political force.
According to his remarks, the party's digital membership registration drive has generated substantial interest across the country, indicating growing public engagement. Nwosu concluded by emphasizing that the ADC has evolved beyond being merely a politicians' party, transforming into a genuine citizens' platform aimed at fostering greater harmony within Nigeria's political system.
