ADC Youth Wing Issues 72-Hour Ultimatum to INEC Chairman Amid Leadership Crisis
The national youth wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stringent 72-hour ultimatum to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan. The demand centers on the recognition of the embattled leadership of former Senate President David Mark within the party, with threats of a nationwide protest if not met.
Youths Call for Immediate Resignation and Action
In a statement released on Monday, April 6, the ADC youths, represented by their national youth leader, Balarabe Rufai, alongside a coalition of civil society organizations in Abuja, called for the immediate resignation of Professor Amupitan. They emphasized that failure to comply with their ultimatum within the specified timeframe would trigger peaceful and lawful civic actions across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Balarabe Rufai stated, "We will initiate nationwide, peaceful, and lawful civic action across all 36 states and the FCT if INEC does not adhere to our call within 72 hours." This move highlights escalating tensions within the ADC and growing youth activism in Nigerian politics.
Background of the Crisis
The crisis stems from internal disputes within the ADC over leadership recognition, with David Mark's faction facing challenges. The youth wing's ultimatum underscores broader issues of electoral integrity and party governance, as they seek to pressure INEC into intervening in the party's affairs.
This development comes amid ongoing political realignments and could impact upcoming electoral processes, drawing attention from various stakeholders in Nigeria's democratic landscape.
