Akwa Ibom Diaspora in Lagos Declares Support for Tinubu, Akpabio, and Eno Ahead of 2027 Polls
A significant political development has emerged as a group of Akwa Ibom indigenes residing in Lagos has publicly declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno in anticipation of the 2027 general elections. This endorsement was formally announced during the inauguration ceremony of the Lagos chapter of the Arise With Renewed Hope Initiative, which took place at D’Podium International Hall in Lagos.
Event Highlights and Key Endorsements
The gathering brought together a diverse assembly of Akwa Ibom community members, political figures, and representatives from various socio-cultural groups. A pivotal moment occurred when a motion endorsing the three political leaders was moved by Otobong Bob, the Majority Leader of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, and seconded by Aniekan Uko. The motion was unanimously adopted by all participants present, solidifying the group's stance.
Speakers at the event emphasized that the initiative's primary goal is to mobilize support among Akwa Ibom indigenes living outside their home state, particularly in major urban centers like Lagos. Uwem Okoko, the President-General of the group, expressed gratitude for the strong turnout and highlighted the Lagos chapter as a crucial component of the organization's outreach strategy. He affirmed that the endorsement accurately reflects the collective position of the members who attended the inauguration.
Organizational Efforts and Future Plans
In his welcome address, Otuekong Ubong Jackson Essien, the Lagos State coordinator, noted that the high attendance at the event demonstrated significant interest within the community. He further stated that the group is committed to mobilizing support for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the upcoming election cycle. Udo Keiran Akpan, the initiative's international coordinator, underscored Lagos's importance as a strategic location for engaging Akwa Ibom indigenes who reside away from their state of origin.
The event featured the swearing-in of chapter executives and advisory council members, along with goodwill messages delivered by representatives from community associations and professional groups. This broad participation showcased the involvement of various organizations within the Akwa Ibom diaspora in Lagos, highlighting a unified effort.
Expansion and Broader Mobilization Strategy
Organizers revealed that the initiative has extended its activities to other parts of Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory, Cross River, Rivers, and several northern states, as part of a comprehensive mobilization plan. The final phase of chapter inaugurations is scheduled to occur in Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, with a closing event planned at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
This development aligns with the early positioning of political groups and stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections, as various organizations seek to consolidate support across regions and among diaspora communities within Nigeria. The move signals a proactive approach to building political alliances and fostering grassroots engagement in the lead-up to the polls.
