Amaechi Calls for Unity and Strategy in ADC to Challenge Tinubu in 2027
Rotimi Amaechi, the former governor of Rivers State and ex-minister of transportation, has issued a clarion call to members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Speaking at the party's convention in Abuja on Tuesday, April 14, Amaechi urged the coalition to actively seek out a viable presidential candidate capable of unseating President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
Emphasis on Merit Over Religion
In his address, Amaechi strongly advised party members to set aside religious considerations when selecting their standard-bearer. He argued that allowing such factors to influence the decision would severely undermine efforts to build a formidable and united coalition. "If you think President Tinubu will hand over power to you, you are wasting your time," Amaechi stated emphatically. "ADC must come together and decide on a viable candidate."
He drew from historical precedent, recalling his own experience joining the ADC ahead of the 2015 elections. He highlighted that a successful search for a strong candidate was achieved then and should be replicated. "Ethnicity and religion will only take us back to where we started," he cautioned, advocating for a focus on capability and electability.
Mixed Reactions from the Public
The former minister's comments have sparked a wave of reactions across Nigeria, with many citizens expressing skepticism and criticism towards the opposition's preparedness.
- Ojo Festus Olanrewaju questioned the opposition's substance: "Rather than talking about what you will do differently, it is all about Tinubu and Tinubu. Tell Nigerians what you do differently, tell them the policies of Tinubu that you will reverse. Let's know."
- Obianuju Menkiti accused Amaechi of acting as a proxy: "Amaechi is doing Atiku's bidding by saying no ethnicity (the South should be allowed to finish before shifting back to the North). You people can play the guitar to the public, but Nigerians know too well who bought the guitar, the venue & also brought about the circus."
- Ogheneochuko compared the strategy to a failed US campaign: "These ones are not ready. They are following the John McCain template, who ran against Obama in 2008. Instead of telling Americans what he wants to do, he was busy talking about Obama this, Obama that, well, he lost. These ones here in Nigeria are jokers and even worse. Zero ideas."
Criticism of ADC's Internal Cohesion
Further criticism was directed at the ADC's apparent lack of organization and decisiveness. Nedu remarked, "By this time, you have not yet agreed on a candidate, which shows the lack of seriousness and ineptitude by you guys in ADC y’all think Tinubu is joking, right?"
Sam Leke targeted Amaechi's personal credibility, referencing a past interview: "A man who was a minister just 3 years ago under the same APC. A man who was asked on national TV how he made his money and his response 'my wife is a successful woman' Nigeria is truly an entertainment scene."
The convention itself faced logistical issues, with reports of a malfunctioning air conditioning system, prompting some attendees to humorously threaten, "We’ll use this place by force." This incident added to the narrative of disarray surrounding the opposition's efforts.
Amaechi's speech underscores the intense political maneuvering already underway as Nigeria looks toward the 2027 presidential race. His call for a pragmatic, united front within the ADC highlights the significant challenges opposition parties face in coalescing around a single, strong candidate to challenge the incumbent administration.
