Atiku Abubakar Commits to Backing ADC's 2027 Presidential Candidate
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has publicly declared his unwavering support for whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the lead-up to the 2027 general election. In a recent interview with DW Hausa, Atiku emphasized his loyalty to the party's democratic processes, dismissing any speculation about internal divisions or personal ambitions.
Atiku's Pledge of Loyalty to Party Process
Atiku stressed that the ADC's internal democratic mechanisms would determine its flagbearer, and he would fully respect and endorse the outcome, regardless of who is selected. He drew parallels to his experience in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where multiple aspirants contested, highlighting his commitment to unity and party cohesion. When questioned about supporting a younger candidate, Atiku responded affirmatively, stating, "Yes, why not?" He elaborated on his motivation, citing concerns for future generations and their prospects in Nigeria.
ADC Dismisses INEC's Position on Convention
Atiku also addressed concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which recently announced it would suspend engagement with the ADC's leadership and not monitor its upcoming national convention. INEC cited a court ruling for this decision, but the ADC has rejected the move, arguing that the electoral body misinterpreted the judgment. The party remains steadfast in its plans to proceed with the scheduled convention and other activities, with Atiku downplaying the significance of INEC's stance.
Atiku Blames Vested Interests for ADC Challenges
In his remarks, Atiku alleged that the challenges facing the ADC are driven by powerful vested interests that feel threatened by the party's increasing popularity across Nigeria. He maintained that the ADC continues to attract new members nationwide, positioning itself as a viable and growing political platform ahead of the next election cycle. Atiku expressed confidence that Nigerians are eager for political change, citing deteriorating economic conditions and rising insecurity as key factors fueling this desire.
Youth Inclusion Central to ADC's Vision
Highlighting the party's structure, Atiku described the ADC as youth-focused, with a significant number of young people seeking elective positions at various levels, from local councils to the national assembly. He stated, "The youths have taken over the party. Most of those seeking elective positions, from councillor to state assembly, national assembly and House of Representatives, are young people. We have always said our party belongs to youths and women. Our role is to create the opportunity and hand it over to them." This emphasis on youth inclusion underscores the ADC's strategy to appeal to a broader demographic.
Atiku on Nigeria's Readiness for Change
Atiku expressed strong belief that Nigerians are prepared for political transformation, pointing to worsening security and economic hardships. He attributed rising insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, to issues such as youth unemployment and poor access to education. Atiku criticized the government for failing to ensure school enrollment and job creation, adding that corruption and embezzlement have been tolerated, exacerbating the nation's challenges. He concluded by reaffirming his support for the ADC's mission and the collective push for a better future in Nigeria.
