Two Million Benin Nationals in Nigeria to Vote in 2026 Presidential Election
No fewer than two million Benin nationals residing in Nigeria are poised to participate in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026. This significant diaspora voting initiative underscores the growing influence of expatriate communities in shaping the political landscape of their home country.
Diaspora Voting Centers Established Across Nigeria
The Chargé d’Affaires of the Republic of Benin in Nigeria, Bernice Gnansounou Bankole, revealed this development during a sensitisation programme held for Benin nationals in Abuja. She confirmed that Nigeria is among ten countries where diaspora voting will take place, with designated polling centers located in Abuja, Lagos, and Ibadan.
"Everything is going fine and we are ready for the election," Bankole stated. "In Nigeria, we will be having elections in our embassy in Abuja here, also in our consul general in Lagos, and at our honorary consul in Ibadan, Oyo state. So that’s why we gather you here to witness this memorable occasion."
She emphasized the importance of mobilising the large community of compatriots in Nigeria, noting that the media chat aimed to encourage massive turnout on election day. "We have a huge spread of our compatriots in Nigeria, and so the media chat is to sensitise them to come out massively to vote on April 12, 2026. We are ready and we will continue to sensitise all Beninios for the election," she added.
Political Endorsement for Wadagni-Talata Ticket
The ruling coalition has officially fielded the current Minister of Finance and Economy, Romuald Wadagni, as its presidential candidate, with incumbent Vice President Mariam Chabi Talata as his running mate. This ticket represents a strategic move to ensure continuity and stability in governance.
During the occasion, Former President of Benin People in Nigeria, Hormone Younkpati, passionately urged compatriots to support the Wadagni-Talata ticket. He described the duo as best positioned to continue the country’s transformation under President Patrice Talon, highlighting their commitment to effective governance and progressive policies.
"For Benin nationals in Nigeria, it is an opportunity to showcase the remarkable progress the country has made over the past decade," Younkpati remarked. He praised Wadagni as a young and capable leader whose experience as Minister of Finance is widely recognised, adding that those who have visited Benin in recent years can attest to his impactful leadership.
"In Abuja and across Nigeria, we want to show our support for this candidate and ensure a strong turnout on April 12. This is the main reason for our mobilisation efforts," he asserted.
Administrative Reforms and Economic Progress
Younkpati also highlighted significant administrative reforms implemented by the current administration, which have simplified access to services for diaspora citizens. Many documents can now be obtained online without the need to travel home, a development he described as a major advancement for the diaspora community.
"This is a major development for us in the diaspora. Previously, we had to return to Benin to complete such processes," he explained, underscoring the government’s efforts to engage and support its citizens abroad.
He further stressed that Benin’s progress should not be derailed by attempts to seize power by force, advocating for leaders who promote steady development. Reflecting on economic achievements, he noted that Benin’s economy was ranked seventh among West African nations in 2020, illustrating the country’s upward trajectory and resilience.
The upcoming election not only represents a critical moment for Benin’s political future but also demonstrates the active participation of its diaspora in Nigeria, reinforcing the bonds between the two nations and the shared commitment to democratic processes.
