The Edo State Government has publicly distanced itself from controversial remarks made by one of its aides, Emmanuel Eghogho, who was captured on video threatening to arrest opposition figures, including Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi. The statement came after a viral video sparked widespread public outrage and condemnation across social media platforms.
Viral Video Triggers Public Backlash
The controversy began when a video surfaced online showing Mr. Eghogho, identified as a Senior Special Assistant to Governor Monday Okpebholo, addressing the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika. In the footage, Eghogho allegedly suggested that members of the opposition, such as Peter Obi, could be arrested and transferred to Abuja. The remarks quickly drew sharp criticism from various quarters, with many accusing the aide of political intimidation.
Government Distances Itself from Aide's Comments
Reacting to the development, the Edo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua, issued a statement during a press briefing in Benin City on Monday, April 27. Afegbua made it clear that the government had no connection with the comments made by the aide and strongly rejected any form of political harassment.
“We want to distance ourselves from that statement because it is not the position of the Edo State Government, but the voice of an individual that is answerable to existing laws of the land,” Afegbua said. He further emphasized that Governor Okpebholo does not tolerate thuggery, political hegemony, or any attempt to subdue the opposition using threats. “We welcome robust opposition engagement, constructive engagement and collective bargaining. Opposition helps ruling parties to think better,” he added.
Administration Condemns Incendiary Conduct
Afegbua described the viral video as inappropriate and inflammatory, reiterating the government's commitment to peaceful political engagement. “It is not our article of trade. It is not our thematic focus as a government. We try as much as possible to promote unity of purpose and a spirit of camaraderie among all Edo residents,” he stated.
Political Tensions in Context
The incident occurs against a backdrop of heightened political sensitivities in Edo State. Earlier this month, the Okpebholo administration faced scrutiny after sealing an event centre where Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem reportedly made critical remarks about President Bola Tinubu during a performance. The venue was later reopened by state authorities. These events have fueled ongoing debates about freedom of expression and political tolerance in the state.
Governor Okpebholo has previously taken a firm stance regarding Peter Obi's visit to the South-South region, sparking further debate. His remarks during the launch of the revamped Edo Line transport company in Benin on July 22 highlighted the administration's position on opposition activities.
The Edo State Government's swift disassociation from the aide's comments underscores its desire to maintain a peaceful political environment and avoid any perception of state-sponsored intimidation.
