Oyebanji Secures Second Term with Overwhelming Majority

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has been re-elected for a second term in the March 2026 gubernatorial election, defeating his closest rival by a wide margin. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Oyebanji polled 523,456 votes, representing 62.4% of the total valid votes cast, while his main opponent, Segun Oni of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 245,678 votes (29.3%). The election was held across all 16 local government areas of the state, with a voter turnout of 58%.

Peaceful Conduct of the Election

The election was largely peaceful, with no major incidents of violence reported. INEC officials praised the orderly conduct of voters and security agencies. Speaking after the declaration, the INEC returning officer for the state, Professor Adebayo Ogunleye, stated, 'The process was transparent and credible, reflecting the will of the people of Ekiti State.'

Oyebanji's Victory Speech

In his acceptance speech, Governor Oyebanji thanked the people of Ekiti for their trust and promised to consolidate on the achievements of his first term. 'This victory is not mine but ours. Opposition Reacts to Defeat

The PDP candidate, Segun Oni, conceded defeat and congratulated Oyebanji. He said, 'While we disagree with the outcome, we respect the decision of the people. We will remain vigilant and continue to serve as a strong opposition.' Analysts attribute Oyebanji's victory to his performance in office, particularly in road construction and agricultural development.

Analysis of the Results

The APC won in 14 of the 16 local government areas, with the PDP winning in two. Oyebanji's strongest support came from his home local government of Ekiti West, where he secured 85% of the vote. The election was closely watched as a test of the ruling APC's popularity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
