Fayemi Criticizes Kangaroo Endorsement of N'Assembly Aspirants for 2027
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has strongly dismissed what he termed a "kangaroo endorsement" of National Assembly aspirants ahead of the 2027 general elections in the state. Speaking at his hometown of Isan-Ekiti over the weekend while hosting party stakeholders, Fayemi expressed deep concern over the ongoing activities of individuals he described as "opportunists" within government circles, which he asserted have significantly polarized the party.
Call for Consensus and Electoral Preparedness
Fayemi acknowledged the importance of consensus in selecting candidates where all aspirants are in agreement. However, he insisted that elections are unavoidable in situations where people fail to agree on a consensus method for picking a party candidate. He emphasized that any serious aspirant must be prepared to face a primary election, relying on their performance record to speak for them rather than relying on backdoor endorsements.
Urging Accountability and Constitutional Adherence
The former governor specifically urged all aspirants, particularly those currently serving in the National Assembly who are enjoying the votes of the electorate, to be ready to demonstrate their achievements to the people before seeking endorsement for another term. He stressed the critical need for strict adherence to the party's constitution, its core principles, and the provisions of the Electoral Act to prevent unnecessary litigations following the primaries.
Fayemi's remarks highlight growing tensions within the Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress as the 2027 elections approach, with the former governor positioning himself as a voice for procedural integrity and against what he perceives as undemocratic practices within the party's candidate selection process.
