Governor Fubara Advocates for APC Candidates in Rivers Bye-Elections

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has issued a direct appeal to voters, urging them to support the candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming bye-elections. The elections, scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026, aim to fill vacant seats in the Rivers State House of Assembly for Ahoada East Constituency 2 and Khana Constituency 2.

Election Described as a Family Affair

In a statement released on Friday, February 20, 2026, by his Chief Press Secretary, Onwuka Nzeshi, Governor Fubara characterized the electoral process as a family affair. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and avoiding any actions that could lead to discord during the exercise. Everybody should be law-abiding and avoid doing anything that will disturb the peace during the exercise, Fubara stated, adding that there is no need for rancour and acrimony in what he views as a unified community event.

Police Enforce Movement Restrictions

To ensure a smooth and secure voting process, the Rivers State Police Command has implemented movement restrictions in Ahoada East and Khana Local Government Areas. These restrictions will be in effect from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM on election day. The police have outlined strict rules to uphold a peaceful and credible electoral environment, including:

  • Prohibiting loitering and the display of political party insignia at polling units to prevent voter intimidation.
  • Allowing only specific authorized vehicles to operate within the restricted zones during the designated hours.

This measure mirrors similar actions taken in other states, such as Kano, where an 18-hour movement restriction was imposed ahead of State Assembly by-elections on the same date.

Broader Political Context and Strategic Moves

The bye-elections occur within a broader political landscape where strategic alliances are forming. In a related development, the Action Alliance (AA) chairmanship candidate, Godson Nemieboka, stepped down from the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) race and endorsed the APC contender, Christopher Zakka. Nemieboka described his withdrawal as a strategic move to prevent political fragmentation, following consultations with party stakeholders. This endorsement highlights a trend of consolidation behind APC candidates in various electoral contests across Nigeria.

Governor Fubara's call for voter support underscores the significance of these bye-elections in shaping the legislative composition of Rivers State. Eligible voters in the affected constituencies are encouraged to participate actively while adhering to the guidelines set forth by authorities to ensure a orderly and transparent process.
