Political Advocacy Group Endorses Okutepa Danladi for Kogi East Senate Seat
A political advocacy group in Kogi State has officially endorsed Okutepa Usman Danladi for the Kogi East senatorial seat ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 general elections. The endorsement was formally announced in Abuja by the Kogi East Political and Good Governance Group, commonly known as KEPGGG. According to the group, this decision was reached after extensive consultations within the district and a thorough review of the local political dynamics.
Historical Context and Representation Concerns
The group emphasized that its position reflects deep concerns about representation across the three federal constituencies that constitute Kogi East. It noted that historically, the area had produced governors of the state before political power shifted to the central senatorial district in 2015. KEPGGG stated that this development significantly altered the balance of political influence in the state, with serious implications for the district's visibility and effectiveness in governance.
Call for Equitable Rotation of Senate Representation
KEPGGG provided a detailed analysis of the distribution of senatorial representation within Kogi East. The group highlighted that by the end of the current electoral cycle, the Dekina/Bassa federal constituency will have completed 18 years in the Senate. Meanwhile, the Ankpa federal constituency has had eight years of representation. Importantly, the Idah federal constituency has yet to produce a senator. On this basis, the group argued strongly for what it described as a more equitable rotation of representation among the constituencies to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
Endorsement Based on Competence and Community Engagement
In its official statement, KEPGGG described Okutepa Danladi, who leads DABAH Homes Limited, as a candidate with substantial experience in business and active engagement at the community level. The group asserted that these attributes were key factors informing its endorsement. Furthermore, KEPGGG urged all political parties to prioritize competence and experience in their candidate selection processes, rather than engaging in what it termed proxy politics. The group clarified that its position is not aligned with any specific political party and is intended solely to contribute meaningfully to discussions around representation and development within the district.
Political Landscape and Future Implications
As of now, there has been no official response from other potential contenders for the Kogi East Senate seat. However, as political activity gradually intensifies in the build-up to the 2027 elections, endorsements by influential local groups like KEPGGG are expected to play a crucial role in shaping early alignments and strategies within constituencies across Nigeria.
