Group opposes councillorship rotation disruption in Enugu

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, faces a new controversy as a group, the Okaa-Omee General Assembly Amankwo in Oji River Local Council, has raised the alarm over an alleged plot to disrupt the arrangement for the rotation of the councillorship seat for Inyi Ward 3 between Amankwo community and Obune community.

Petition Against Alleged Usurpation

In a petition to the Executive Chairman of Oji River Local Council titled ‘Malicious Denial of Amankwo Village Political Rights and Damaging of Inyi Ward 3 Councillorship Rotation Principle,’ the group accused Obune community of plotting to usurp the turn of Amankwo community in the forthcoming local council polls in the state. It appealed to the chairman to come to the aid of Amankwo community and allow it to produce the next councillor for Inyi Ward 3, “which is our right this time around.”

Details of the Petition

The petition dated May 27, 2026, and signed by the Chairman of the group, Mr. Jude Onyebueke; Secretary, Mr. Patrick Ike and other stakeholders from the community reads in part: “Inyi Ward 3 in Oji River LGA of Enugu State is made up two distinct villages, Obune and Amankwo Inyi.” It continues: “The two brother villages had shared, by rotation, ward councillorship positions since Adam. One village goes for a term or two depending on the state government policy and the other goes in the same vein.” Again, the cycle rotates to other villages in a similar manner. “This brotherly sharing formula, which had sustained political harmony and peaceful coexistence, is being maliciously thwarted by our brother Obune in the present 2026 councillorship elections. Obune, having gone for four years, is now angling for another term, which is brooding of chaos between them and Amankwo, their brother.”

Allegations of Political Imbalance

The group alleged that Obune had been using its population advantage over Amankwo to politically oppress and arm twist them for a long time, listing numerous political positions Obune had held which Amankwo has not. “Obune has produced a deputy chairman of Oji River LGA, a chairman and a member of Enugu State House of Assembly. They have also produced members of Mmam River Development Centre with Amankwo producing none of these. Another imminent political imbalance will be perpetuated by their producing the next councillor. This imbalance could escalate into a serious future crisis if not addressed,” the group said.
