The Kwara Young Progressive Forum and Good Governance Initiative has called on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at both the national and state levels to reconsider what it described as the withdrawal of support for businessman and party stalwart, Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki, ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State.
In a statement issued by its Convener, Dr Adams Abdulwahab Opeyemi, the group argued that the party should carefully assess its options as it prepares for the next electoral cycle, warning that internal disagreements could weaken the APC's chances in the state.
The group expressed concern over what it characterised as the treatment of Seriki, whom it described as a loyal member of the party with a longstanding record of support for the APC. "It is unacceptable and counterproductive for a man who has contributed immensely to the progress of the APC to be treated in this manner," the statement said.
According to the group, Ambassador Seriki possesses the political reach and grassroots appeal required to strengthen the party's prospects in the 2027 governorship contest. The forum described him as an influential mobiliser with a history of engaging with communities across the state through business and empowerment initiatives.
It also highlighted Seriki's involvement in the "O to Ge" political movement, which played a significant role in reshaping Kwara's political landscape and contributed to the APC's emergence as the dominant political force in the state.
"Ambassador Seriki embodies the aspirations of many young people in Kwara State. He represents hope for a new generation seeking inclusive governance and broader opportunities," Opeyemi said.
The group further pointed to Seriki's entrepreneurial activities and philanthropic interventions, which it said had positively impacted many residents through job creation and empowerment programmes. "While others make promises, Seriki has demonstrated commitment through initiatives that have touched lives across the state," the statement added.
The forum appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leadership of the APC and other stakeholders within the party to intervene and ensure that all decisions relating to the party's governorship ticket are guided by fairness, consultation and the broader interests of the party.
According to the group, adopting a process that reflects the wishes of party members and stakeholders would strengthen internal cohesion and enhance the APC's competitiveness ahead of the 2027 general election. It urged party leaders to utilise all available internal mechanisms to resolve differences and maintain unity within the Kwara APC.
"The decisions taken today will shape the future of the party in Kwara State. It is therefore important that stakeholders prioritise unity, inclusiveness and the long-term interests of the APC," the statement said.
