The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for political parties to submit the list of their candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections. The new deadline is Tuesday, 14 July 2025, at midnight, moving from the original date of Saturday, 11 July 2025.
Reason for Extension
In a statement by INEC spokesperson Mohammed Harun, the commission said the extension was granted following an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the scheduled timeline. Harun emphasized INEC's commitment to inclusivity while acting within the provisions of the Electoral Act.
He called on political parties to take advantage of the extended period to ensure that all necessary details are uploaded before the expiration date.
Timeline of Activities
INEC had earlier adjusted its timetable for the 2027 general elections. In the revised schedule, political parties were required to conduct their primary elections between 23 April and 30 May 2025. The deadline for submitting membership registers was also extended from 21 April to 10 May 2025.
The commission has fixed 16 January 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for 6 February 2027.
Previous Collaboration
INEC has also partnered with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to tackle election fraud in the upcoming elections.
