INEC Unveils Special Voting Framework for Vulnerable Groups in Ogun 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Ogun State has officially announced that Persons With Disabilities (PWDs), the elderly, and pregnant women will receive priority voting treatment during the upcoming 2027 general elections in the state. This declaration was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mrs. Feyijimi Saseyi, during a media engagement held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Abeokuta on Thursday.
Deliberate Measures to Prevent Disenfranchisement
Saseyi emphasized that INEC has implemented intentional strategies to facilitate voting for vulnerable populations, ensuring no eligible voter is excluded due to physical limitations or personal circumstances. She detailed that the commission has established operational policies and a comprehensive framework to address potential obstacles that could impede these groups from exercising their democratic rights.
The commissioner stated, "We are now tasked with the responsibility of implementing welfare measures that guarantee their participation and safety on election day. Our provisions include assistive materials like Braille guides for visually impaired voters and support systems for individuals with mobility challenges."
Structures for Priority Access and Encouragement
On the specifics of election day logistics, Saseyi assured that structured arrangements are in place to provide priority access at polling units for PWDs, the elderly, and pregnant women. She actively encouraged Persons With Disabilities not to abstain from the electoral process out of fear or uncertainty, highlighting that adequate preparations have been made to ensure their comfort and security across all polling locations in Ogun State.
"Nobody will be excluded. We have structures in place to ensure that persons living with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women are given priority at polling units," she affirmed.
Media's Role in Electoral Transparency and Trust
Earlier in the event, NUJ Chairman Wale Olanrewaju underscored the evolving and critical role of journalists in the electoral landscape as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections. He articulated that the media serves not merely as observers but as essential partners in fostering transparency, credibility, and public trust within the democratic process.
Olanrewaju explained, "As journalists, we view ourselves as critical stakeholders and partners in ensuring transparency, deepening credibility, and building public trust in our electoral system. The media has taken deliberate steps to actively engage political actors by providing platforms for open discussions on their ambitions and policies."
He highlighted innovative media practices, noting, "We bring political figures here to speak with us, broadcasting these conversations live on radio. This approach is unprecedented, not only in Ogun State but across the South-West region and Nigeria as a whole."
This initiative by INEC reflects a broader commitment to inclusive electoral practices, aiming to enhance participation from all segments of society in the 2027 elections, while media collaborations continue to strengthen democratic engagement and accountability.
