The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken a fresh action regarding the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), reverting its earlier stance. The commission has now officially recognised the David Mark-led leadership of the party, following the Supreme Court's affirmation of Mark as the legitimate leader.
Supreme Court Ruling and INEC's Response
On Thursday, April 30, the Supreme Court dismissed the Court of Appeal ruling that had led to the derecognition of Mark's leadership. The apex court's decision effectively upheld Mark's position as the leader of the ADC. In response, INEC has aligned itself with the Supreme Court's judgment, thereby recognising the former Senate president's leadership of the party.
Background of the ADC Leadership Crisis
The leadership tussle within the ADC had been a subject of legal battles, with the Nafiu Bala faction challenging the legitimacy of the Mark-led group. The crisis deepened after the Court of Appeal's earlier ruling, which had prompted INEC to derecognise Mark's leadership. However, the Supreme Court's intervention has now resolved the matter in favour of Mark.
INEC's decision to revert its position is seen as a move to comply with the highest court's ruling and ensure stability within the party. The commission had previously faced criticism for its handling of the crisis, but the latest action is expected to bring clarity to the ADC's leadership structure.
This development is significant for the ADC as it prepares for future electoral activities. With the leadership now settled, the party can focus on its political strategies and participation in upcoming elections.
