The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, has met with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to seek enhanced security collaboration ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting, held in Abuja, underscored the critical role of security in ensuring credible elections.
Security as a Priority
Prof. Amupitan described security as both the first mile and the last mile of the electoral process, emphasizing that the safety of voters and personnel is fundamental to a credible election. He confirmed that INEC has commenced full preparations for the upcoming polls.
Election Timetable
According to the revised timetable necessitated by the Electoral Act 2026, the Presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027. This will be followed by the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections on February 6, 2027.
Key Challenges Identified
Amupitan identified several critical factors currently undermining public confidence and posing risks to national security. These include electoral malpractices, vote trading, and localized violence. He noted that the activation of political party activities, such as ward congresses and conventions, serves as a security trigger that requires immediate and sustained attention from law enforcement.
Call for Risk Assessments
To address these challenges, the Chairman urged the police to conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential flashpoints before they escalate into open conflict. This proactive approach is essential to maintaining peace and order during the electoral period.
