INEC Halts Voter Revalidation Exercise Nationwide

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a directive to all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to immediately suspend all publicity and logistical preparations for the planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise. This move comes as part of the commission's efforts to update the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections, but has been put on hold pending further instructions.

Initial Plans and Timeline

INEC had previously announced that the voter revalidation exercise would commence on April 13, 2026. In a letter signed by its Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the commission instructed RECs to begin necessary preparations, including mobilising personnel and readying INEC Voter Enrolment Devices (IVEDs). The proposed timeline outlined a phased approach: starting at the local government level from April 13 to May 2, moving to the Registration Area (RA) level from May 5 to May 11, and concluding at polling units (PUs) from May 13 to May 19.

Changes in Meeting Format

In addition to the suspension, INEC announced a change in the format of its scheduled meeting with RECs. A notice stated that the meeting, originally set for Thursday, April 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., will now be held virtually via Zoom. RECs were advised to remain in their respective states and await login details for the virtual session, indicating a shift towards remote coordination amid the suspension.

Directive to Suspend Activities

In a follow-up directive, INEC explicitly instructed all RECs to step down all publicity and arrangements related to the voter revalidation exercise. The notice emphasised that RECs should await further directives from the commission, highlighting a pause in the electoral preparation process. The commission expressed regret over any inconvenience caused by these sudden changes and reassured stakeholders of its continued commitment to ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process.

This suspension raises questions about the timeline and logistics for updating the voter register, as INEC navigates internal adjustments ahead of the 2027 elections. Stakeholders are now awaiting further announcements from the commission regarding the resumption or modification of the revalidation plans.
