The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has formally called for an extension to the election timetable set for the upcoming local government council polls. The party argues that the current schedule unfairly disadvantages them and the majority of Kogi residents who live in rural areas.
PDP's Call for Fair Play in Grassroots Democracy
State Chairman, Honourable Muhammed Sanni Gambo, made this demand public on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, following a joint meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) and the State Executive Committee (SEC). The meeting was held at the party's secretariat located in Lokongoma phase II, Lokoja.
Gambo stated that the PDP is fully committed to contesting the October 2026 local government elections. He emphasized that this decision is driven by the party's desire to represent the interests of the grassroots population. "The majority of our citizens live at the grassroots. For them to get the true benefit of democracy is the reason why the PDP will be contesting," Gambo declared.
Allegations of Exclusion and a Confident Prediction
The chairman specifically urged the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission (KOSIEC) to reconsider and extend the deadline for the submission of candidate nomination forms. He labeled the current abrupt closure of the portal as "unacceptable" and suggested it was a tactical move to sideline the PDP from the electoral process.
"An extension is necessary, and we are confident that the PDP will win decisively," Gambo asserted, projecting a victorious outcome for his party if given a fair chance. He reminisced about the PDP's past administration in the state, claiming it delivered robust local governance, functional infrastructure, and employment, which he now promises to restore.
Internal Reconciliation and a Legal Mandate
Addressing internal party dynamics, Chairman Gambo revealed plans to set up reconciliation committees. These bodies will aim to address grievances and unify all members ahead of the crucial polls. "In the coming days, these committees will reach out to every stakeholder to foster unity and inclusivity," he promised.
He also took the opportunity to reaffirm his leadership position, citing the Federal High Court judgment of 10 November which validated his election as state chairman. Gambo expressed gratitude for the ruling, which he saw as a triumph of justice over political godfatherism and financial influence.
In a rallying cry, he called on all members, including those who had left the party, to return and rebuild. "Kogi PDP has bounced back, our story is a story of resilience," he proclaimed, painting a picture of a party ready to reclaim its former glory and salvage the state.
The chairman concluded with a message directly to the people of Kogi State, assuring them that the PDP has a blueprint for the rapid socio-economic development of the state and is back "with full force."
