Kwankwasiyya Youth Groups in Kano Outline Demands for Political Realignment with Governor Abba Yusuf
In a significant political development within Kano State, several youth groups affiliated with the Kwankwasiyya movement have publicly declared their willingness to abandon the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and join Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf in his recent political shift. This announcement comes with specific conditions that must be met by the governor's administration to secure their support.
Youths Demand Genuine Inclusion and Governance Participation
The youth leaders emphasized that their potential alignment with Governor Yusuf, who recently resigned from the NNPP citing internal crises and leadership disputes, is contingent upon addressing what they describe as systemic marginalization. They argue that young supporters who worked tirelessly for the Kwankwasiyya movement and the NNPP during the 2023 elections have been largely sidelined in the aftermath of the victory.
Aminu Abdullahi, popularly known as Alhaji Warkal, who spoke on behalf of the groups during a youth engagement forum in Kano, stated clearly: "We are not saying we will never move with him. We will move with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf if the government genuinely carries the youths along and gives them a sense of belonging."
Frustration Over Post-Election Neglect
According to Abdullahi, many young people invested significant time, energy, and resources to ensure electoral success but have since been excluded from government programmes, consultations, and opportunities that directly affect them. This perceived abandonment has fueled growing frustration among the movement's grassroots supporters across Kano State.
"These youths sacrificed their time, energy and resources to bring the government into power. But after that, they were not involved in programmes, consultations or opportunities that concern them," Abdullahi explained. He further highlighted that proper youth engagement is crucial for reducing crime and social tension within the state.
Political Interest Over Coercion
The youth leader dismissed any suggestions that external political actors are forcing or inducing the groups to take sides. Instead, he insisted that their position is driven purely by political interest and expectations. "This is not about hijacking anyone. Politics is about interest. If the government listens to the youths and supports them, they will support the government in return," Abdullahi asserted.
He also revealed that discussions with various youth groups across Kano indicate a widespread willingness to align with Governor Yusuf, provided their concerns regarding inclusion and participation are adequately addressed by his administration.
Background of Governor Yusuf's Defection
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf formally announced his resignation from the NNPP in a letter addressed to the party's chairman in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation took effect from January 25, 2026. In his statement, the governor cited persistent internal challenges, leadership disagreements, and ongoing legal processes that have weakened the party's cohesion and led to disenfranchisement among members.
This political realignment occurs amidst heightened tensions within Kano's political landscape. Supporters of the Kwankwasiyya movement recently staged a show of solidarity at the residence of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the national leader of the NNPP and founder of the movement. Meanwhile, Kwankwaso himself expressed disappointment over the governor's departure, declaring the day of defection as "World Betrayal Day."
Implications for Kano's Political Future
The potential migration of Kwankwasiyya youth groups to the All Progressives Congress (APC) alongside Governor Yusuf could significantly alter the political dynamics in Kano State. Their demands highlight a broader call for youth inclusion in governance processes, reflecting a growing insistence among young Nigerians for meaningful participation in political decision-making.
As these developments unfold, all eyes remain on how Governor Yusuf's administration will respond to the conditions set forth by these influential youth groups. The outcome will likely shape not only the immediate political alliances in Kano but also set a precedent for youth engagement in Nigerian politics moving forward.
