Labour Party Announces 2027 Presidential Primaries Date and Major Suspensions

The Labour Party (LP) has officially set May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primaries, a crucial step in its preparations for the upcoming 2027 general elections. This decision was made during a significant meeting of the party's National Executive Council (NEC), which convened in Abuja with officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance to observe the proceedings.

Comprehensive Election Timetable Unveiled

According to a detailed communiqué released after the NEC gathering, the party will submit its official membership register to INEC on April 15, 2026. Furthermore, the primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State House of Assembly positions are scheduled to take place on May 15, 2026. The NEC also formally ratified the actions of the party's national leadership, led by Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, regarding the organization of ward, local government, and state congresses. These congresses are planned for March 26, 28, and 31, 2026, respectively, with the national convention slated for April 11, 2026.

Disciplinary Actions and Suspensions Approved

The council conducted a thorough review of recent internal developments, including the troubling invasion of the party's national secretariat by hoodlums, which was allegedly sponsored by what the party described as "rogue elements." Following recommendations from the Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Salisu Mohammed, the NEC approved the suspension of several party members. Strategic Initiatives for Party Strengthening

In a move aimed at enhancing transparency and broadening participation, the NEC approved the expansion of the party's membership register through a hybrid system. This innovative approach combines digital registration with manual processes specifically designed for rural areas, ensuring compliance with the Electoral Act 2026. Additionally, the council resolved that any existing vacancies within the party's organizational structures will be filled through interim appointments. This measure is intended to maintain administrative continuity until substantive congresses can be conducted to permanently fill these positions.

The NEC strongly urged all party members to utilize internal dispute resolution mechanisms to address any grievances, emphasizing the importance of fostering unity and cohesion within the Labour Party as it gears up for the 2027 electoral cycle.
