Labour Party Crisis Deepens as Usman-Led Faction Suspends 26 Key Figures
The ongoing crisis within Nigeria's opposition Labour Party (LP) has taken a dramatic turn, with the faction led by Senator Nenadi Usman announcing the suspension of 26 prominent party officials. This move significantly intensifies the protracted leadership struggle that has plagued the party for months.
Who Has Been Suspended?
The suspended officials include several high-profile figures from across Nigeria's political landscape. Most notably, the list features Mr Emmanuel Agida, the Benue State Chairman, and Hon. Hilda Doukubo, the former Rivers State chairman. Other key individuals affected are:
- Eneyi G. Zidougha, former Bayelsa State chairman
- Dr Ayo Olorunfemi, former National Deputy Chairman
- Muhammed Sabitu Aliyu, former Bauchi State chairman
The majority of those suspended are believed to maintain loyalty to Julius Abure, the former National Chairman whose position has been contested through legal channels. The announcement was made publicly on Thursday via the party's official X (formerly Twitter) account by the Usman-led Caretaker Committee, which claims to be acting with the full backing of the party's National Executive Committee (NEC).
Legal Backing and Court Rulings
Senator Nenadi Usman, a former Minister of Finance, remains a central figure in this leadership dispute. Her faction asserts that it operates with solid legal foundation following a series of significant court rulings. The most pivotal development occurred on April 4, 2025, when the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment that set aside an earlier Court of Appeal ruling which had recognized Julius Abure as National Chairman, effectively removing him from office.
Building on this Supreme Court verdict, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, affirmed in January 2026 that Usman is the party's valid national chairman. The court further directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Usman-led leadership structure until a national convention can be properly conducted.
Additional Stakeholders Affected
The suspension list extends beyond the most prominent names to include numerous other influential party members across various states. Among them are:
- Lincolin Charles and Ogar Osim
- Vincent Okwuokei and Casmir Agbo Uchenna
- Simon Zubairu Bamga and Abduljamid Sa'ad Suleiman
- Auwala Ahmed and Ularama Jubrila
- Grace Zafara Posat and Suleiman Abdurahman Abdul
- Ajibade Adekunle Samson and Alexander Emmanuel Ombugu
- Elizabeth Ativie and Godwin Jioke
- Airen Igbinedion and Osas Frank
- Kennedy Ahanotu and Abayomi Arabambi
- Umar Faruk Ibrahim, Auwal Tafoki, and Obiora Ifoh
Looking Forward: The National Convention
Amid this escalating internal conflict, the Labour Party has scheduled its national convention for April 28, 2026. This crucial gathering is expected to produce new national officers who will hopefully steer the party toward unity and stability. The convention represents a potential turning point in resolving the deep-seated divisions that have characterized the party's recent history.
The suspensions underscore the severe fractures within the Labour Party's leadership structure and highlight the ongoing power struggle between competing factions. As Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve, the outcome of this internal crisis will significantly impact the party's future direction and its role in the nation's opposition politics.
